Lion Sub-Species

Determination of proper taxonomy or the lion is an issue of debate. Some scientists believe that all lions are derived from a single ancestor and should be all considered Panthera leo leo. Other scientists believe lions should be broken down into the following sub-species.
 
1. P.l. azandica - North East Congo Lion
2. P.l. bleyenberghi - Katanga Lion or Southwest African Lion
3. P.l. europaea - European Lion (Extinct)
4. P.l. goojratensis - Indian Lion
5. P.l. hollisteri - Congo Lion
6. P.l. krugeri - South African Lion or Southeast African Lion
7. P.l. leo (P.l.berberisca) - Barbary Lion (Extinct)
8. P.l. melanochaita - Cape Lion (Extinct)
9. P.l. massaicus - Massai Lion
10. P.l. maculatus - Marozi (Extinct)
11. P.l. nubica - East African Lion
12. P.l. persica - Asiatic Lion or South Asian Lion
13. P.l. roosevelti - Abyssinian Lion
14. P.l. somaliensis - Somali Lion
15. P.l. senegalensis - West African Lion or Senegal Lion
16. P.l. verneyi - Kalahari Lion
