Description

Latin Name: Crocuta crocuta Distribution: Africa
Conservation Status: Conservation dependant
Estimated Weight: Females - 72 kg, Males - 62 kg

The Spotted Hyena is not a scavenger. They are predators, and when hunting in packs, are able to bring down very large prey. When eating, the Spotted Hyena, or Laughing Hyena, eats everything, bones and all. This is due to the fact that their jaws are some of the most powerful of any mammal, or animal, on earth. They sometimes fight over kills with lions, and in most cases, are killed by them.
